Murray Campbell, Partner, Lawson Lundell LLP, Vancouver, BC. Mr. Campbell practises exclusively in the pension and employee benefits area, and is the head of his firm’s Pension and Employee Benefits Group. He is legal counsel for over two dozen multi-employer pension and health and welfare plans, as well as numerous sponsors of single employer arrangements. He has advised on many disputes relating to pension and benefit plans, and is involved in all manners of compliance and governance issues arising out of the administration of such plans. He is a frequent speaker on pension and benefit issues.
 
Faculty
Thomas G. Anderson, Q.C., Anderson Pension Law Consulting, Vancouver, BC. Mr. Anderson has been a member of the BC bar since 1978 and specializes in pension law, particularly in a family law context. He is a consultant for pension plans and family lawyers. He assisted the BC government in developing legislation governing the division of pensions on marriage breakdown (now Part 6 of the BC Family Relations Act) and is the principal author of Questions and Answers about Pension Division on Marriage Breakdown in British Columbia (BCLI 2000). From 1997 - 2005 he was the editor of the standard BC manual on drafting family law agreements, Family Law Agreements - Annotated Precedents. He was also a long time member of the board of the British Columbia Law Institute. Mr. Anderson chaired a committee in 2005-6 that, at the request of the BC Attorney General, reviewed and made recommendations concerning the operation of BC pension division legislation. Mr. Anderson is a frequent speaker and presenter at a number of high-level conferences.
 
 
John Davies, Chairperson, Carpentry Workers Pension and Benefit Plans of BC, Vancouver, BC. Mr. Davies is an engineer and pensions issues speaker/consultant, with extensive hands-on experience addressing pension problems in a unionized environment for both multi-employer and single-employer plans. He has served as full-time Chairperson of the Carpentry Workers Pension and Benefit Plans of BC since 1999. During his tenure, he was responsible for restructuring both multi-employer and single-employer plans from 1999 to 2003. Mr. Davies was a panel member of the British Columbia-Alberta Joint Expert Pension Panel 2007-2008.
 
Laura Samaroo, B.Sc., FCIA, FSA, Actuary and Pension Consultant, Watson Wyatt, Vancouver, BC. Ms. Samaroo provides consulting services to both defined benefit and defined contribution pension plans on a broad range of pension issues. Her expertise is in the area of pension plan design, including flexible pension plans and non-registered supplemental plans. She leads Watson Wyatt's Retirement Practice for Western Canada and is involved in various regional initiatives within Watson Wyatt regarding plan design, product development and risk control. Ms. Samaroo is a past president of the Association of Women in Finance.
 
John Smith, Managing Partner, Lawson Lundell LLP, Vancouver, BC. Mr. Smith has a wide ranging practice covering commercial law, securities and M&A, as well as significant trust matters. Mr. Smith also has a long history of dealing with pension plans and serves on the Pension Committee of a significant corporation. A significant part of his practice is devoted to advising trustees and other fiduciaries about the extent and discharge of their duties. Mr. Smith is widely published and has lectured extensively on corporate, securities and pension law matters.
 
Shelley Speed, FCIA, FSA, Consulting Actuary, Hewitt Associates, Vancouver, BC. Ms. Speed has practiced as a British Columbia actuarial pension consultant for 24 years. She is a strategic advisor to jointly trusteed, union trusteed and corporately governed pension plans in both the public and private sectors. Ms. Speed applies her risk management expertise to assist fiduciaries in the prudent oversight of their plans. She is a Fellow of the Canadian Institute of Actuaries, a Fellow of the Society of Actuaries, past president of the Vancouver Actuaries Club, a Member of the Canadian Pension and Benefits Institute and a frequent speaker on pension issues.
