Chair

David J. Christian, Partner, Thorsteinssons LLP, Vancouver, BC. Mr. Christian’s practice covers all taxation matters, with a particular focus on corporate reorganizations and taxation of owner-managed businesses. He is an adjunct professor of taxation law at the University of British Columbia and a former member of the Joint Committee on Taxation of the Canadian Bar Association and the Canadian Institute of Chartered Accountants. Mr. Christian has lectured on tax matters at conferences and for various professional organizations including the Certified General Accountants Association of British Columbia, the Institute of Chartered Accountants of British Columbia, the British Columbia Medical Association and the Canadian Bar Association.

Faculty

Mark Chartrand, Partner, Borden Ladner Gervais LLP, Vancouver, BC. Mark practises primarily as a tax and estate planning advisor to owners of private companies and their shareholders and directors, and to professionals. He has over 25 years’ experience advising on wealth management, tax-driven corporate reorganizations, estate freezes and re-freezes, family and other trusts, shareholders’ agreements and partnerships. He is a member of the Canadian Tax Foundation, a regular speaker and author on a variety of taxation topics, and is the Legal Advisor to the musica intima Society, a Vancouver-based, internationally renowned choral ensemble.
 
Timothy W. Clarke, Vancouver, BC. Mr. Clarke practises tax law with a leading regional firm, focusing primarily on tax litigation and tax representational work. He acts in various courts for individuals, trusts and corporations of all sizes in federal and provincial income and commodity tax and GST/HST matters, and clients undergoing CRA audits and investigations and making voluntary disclosures. He also acts in tax-related professional negligence matters. Mr. Clarke is a regular lecturer and speaker in business and taxation law, and currently serves as a Governor of the Canadian Tax Foundation and the Foundation’s tax conferences committee. Mr. Clarke was previously a tax litigator with the Federal Department of Justice.
 
Steven Cook, Partner, Thorsteinssons LLP, Vancouver, BC. Steven Cook received his B.Comm. and LL.B. degrees from the University of British Columbia. He was called to the British Columbia Bar in 1982 and the Ontario Bar in 1992. Steve’s practice focuses on corporate and international tax planning, offshore structures, representation, and civil and criminal tax litigation. He has lectured at the Faculty of Law at the University of British Columbia and in the M.B.A. programme offered by the Faculty of Commerce at U.B.C., and has presented numerous papers on tax-related matters.
 
Alexander Demner, Associate, Thorsteinssons LLP, Vancouver, BC. Alexander completed a combined degree program at the University of Calgary, obtaining a B.A. (With Distinction) in International Relations and a second B.A. (With Distinction) in Political Science, before receiving his Juris Doctor at Queen’s University. He was the recipient of several awards throughout his studies, and graduated law school as a member of the Dean’s Honour List. Alexander practises in several different areas of taxation, and is a member of the Canadian Tax Foundation and Canadian Bar Association.
 
Parveen B. Karsan, Associate, Koffman Kalef LLP, Vancouver, BC. Parveen practises corporate tax law with an emphasis on cross-border transactions, mergers and acquisitions and domestic corporate reorganizations. Her practice also includes assisting individual clients with their tax and estate planning needs and assisting all forms of clients with the resolution of tax disputes with the Canada Revenue Agency. Parveen has completed all three parts of the Canadian Institute of Chartered Accountants’ In-depth Tax Course, as well as the In-depth G.S.T. Course.
 
Luke W. Mlynarczyk, Associate, Legacy Tax + Trust Lawyers, Vancouver, BC. Luke practises in the areas of tax planning and tax litigation for a wide variety of domestic and international clients. Luke received his Juris Doctor in 2007 from the University of Victoria, and was called to the British Columbia Bar in 2008. Prior to joining Legacy, he practised in the tax group of a large national firm. Luke is a member of the Canadian Tax Foundation, the International Fiscal Association, the Canadian Bar Association Taxation Subsection and the Canadian Tax Foundation Young Practitioners Steering Committee, and has completed all three parts of the Canadian Institute of Chartered Accountants’ In-depth Tax Course. Luke regularly writes and presents on a variety of tax related subjects.
 
Nicholas P. Smith, Principal, Legacy Tax + Trust Lawyers, Vancouver, BC. For over 20 years, Nick’s practice has focused on Federal, Provincial and international tax and estate planning, with an emphasis on owner manager corporate reorganizations, business succession and working with trusts and estates. He also has extensive experience in acting for taxpayers who have tax disputes with Canada Revenue Agency and the Provincial government. He was called to the British Columbia Bar in 1989 and is a frequent lecturer for a variety of professional organizations. Nick has been qualified by the British Columbia Supreme Court as an expert in Canadian taxation and has been selected by peers for inclusion in the 2011 through 2013 editions of Best Lawyers in Canada (Tax Law).
