Chair

Emma A. McArthur, Lawyer, Farris, Vaughan, Wills & Murphy LLP, Victoria, BC. Emma focuses her practice on estate planning, estate administration, incapacity planning and special purpose trusts. Emma develops and implements estate and tax planning strategies for individuals through the use of wills, powers of attorney, representation agreements for health care, co-ownership agreements and inter vivos trust documents. Emma also acts as counsel to trust companies and other financial institutions on related matters. Emma is Past Chair of the Canadian Bar Association Wills and Trusts – Vancouver section. She has taught estate planning to lawyers in training at the Professional Legal Training Course and presents regularly at continuing education conferences for lawyers, accountants and financial planning professionals. She was recognized in Best Lawyers in Canada (2015), and has a BV Distinguished peer-review rating from LexisNexis – Martindale-Hubbell.

   

Faculty

Annie H. Chen, Associate, Fasken Martineau DuMoulin LLP, Vancouver, BC. Annie Chen practises primarily as a wealth management, estate planning, and personal tax planning lawyer. She focuses on creative estate planning (personal estate planning and corporate planning) and business law (practice advice for owner-managers). Annie is a “tax-savvy” lawyer and works with clients and their advisors in a team-based approach to design and implement creative personal planning and corporate planning structures (including succession planning and tax driven reorganizations) that create value for clients in a cost-effective manner. Annie has been a guest instructor in the Self-Employment Program at Douglas College (2010-2012), and she is currently a member of the Estate Planning Council of Vancouver, the Canadian Tax Foundation, and the Federation of Canadian Entrepreneurs. She completed the Chartered Professional Accountants of Canada’s In-Depth Tax Course (Parts I, II and III) in 2015.

 

Andrea E. Frisby, Associate, Legacy Tax + Trust Lawyers, Vancouver, BC. Andrea focuses her practice on assisting clients with estate and trust planning and administration. She prepares wills, trust documents, powers of attorney and representation agreements for clients, and also provides legal advice on estate and trust administration. Andrea has authored numerous papers in the areas of wills, estate, trusts and capacity issues and is a frequent speaker on these topics. Andrea has recently completed the Society of Trusts and Estate Practitioners (STEP) Diploma achieving a Distinction across all four examinations.

   

Michelle L. Isaak, Partner, DLA Piper (Canada) LLP, Vancouver, BC. Ms. Isaak practises in the areas of wills, estates and trusts. Before focusing on estate and trust law, she practised general litigation, appearing at the trial and appellate levels of court and making written submissions to the Supreme Court of Canada. In her practice, Michelle advises clients on all aspects of trust, estate and incapacity planning. A significant portion of her practice is devoted to advising executors, trustees and beneficiaries on estate and trust administration issues, such as obtaining representation grants; administering assets and trusts; resolving disputes; and passing accounts, both informally and through the court. Michelle has particular expertise in complex trust and estate administration issues such as multijurisdictional estates, insolvent estates and estates where an heir may be responsible for the death of the deceased.

 

Anna Laing, Partner, Farris, Vaughan, Wills & Murphy LLP, Vancouver, BC. Anna Laing’s practice bridges estates and family law and she has a particular interest in how these areas of law intersect. She is a firm believer in alternate dispute resolution but will proceed to Court when her clients’ interests require it and has acted as counsel at all levels of Court. Anna has been recognized by The Best Lawyers in Canada for 2015-16 in the areas of Family Law and Trusts and Estates; and is listed in the Canadian Legal Lexpert Directory as “repeatedly recommended” in the areas of Estate & Personal Tax Planning - Estate Litigation. Anna is the former Chair of the Will and Trusts Section - Vancouver, of the Canadian Bar Association. She is a regular contributor to continuing education seminars for other lawyers.

 

David Thompson, Partner, Thorsteinssons LLP, Vancouver, BC. David was called to the bar in 1984 and has practised exclusively in taxation matters since 1985. David is a registered trust and estate practitioner certified by the Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners. David was a governor of the Canadian Tax Foundation. David is noted as a leading Canadian tax lawyer based on peer-review ratings in Lexpert and in Martindale Hubell. He is noted as a leading Canadian tax lawyer and a leading Canadian trust and estate lawyer based on peer-review ratings in The Best Lawyers in Canada. David has lectured on taxation for a variety of professional audiences and at various professional development seminars including the national and provincial tax conferences of the Canadian Tax Foundation, the national tax conference of the Canadian Institute of Chartered Accountants and the national conference of the Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners. David is a director of the Avalanche Canada Foundation.

 

Ingrid Tsui, Partner, Alexander Holburn Beaudin + Lang LLP, Vancouver, BC. Ingrid leads the Wills, Estates + Trusts practice group at Alexander Holburn. She advises individuals regarding estate planning and estate administration, including wills, trusts, incapacity planning and other tools to achieve effective estate planning results. Ingrid regularly updates a chapter of the CLE Probate Practice Manual and the annotated Power of Attorney Act. She is a member of the Estate Planning Council of Vancouver, and has written and lectured on a wide variety of estate planning topics for both legal and non-legal audiences.
