Paul Cassidy, Partner, McCarthy Tétrault LLP, Vancouver, BC. Paul Cassidy is a partner in McCarthy’s Business Law Group in Vancouver and co-head of their National Environmental, Regulatory & Aboriginal Group. His practice is a combination of regulatory, corporate/commercial, litigation, policy and project development work for clients across North America in a variety of industries. Mr. Cassidy is one of Canada’s leading environmental and energy lawyers, and has been listed in Lexpert’s Guide to the Leading 500 Lawyers in Canada for 20 consecutive years. In the 2018 edition of The Canadian Legal Lexpert Directory, he is the most frequently recommended environmental lawyer in British Columbia.

   

Greg Quandt, Regional Vice President, BC/Yukon, Hemmera Envirochem Inc., Burnaby, BC. Greg is Hemmera’s Regional Vice President responsible for all aspects of project delivery in BC/YT, managing staff and resources, and leading highly technical multi-disciplinary teams; in addition, Greg is responsible for establishing Hemmera’s regional growth strategy to develop new business and identify new markets. Greg is past Chair and current member of the Board of Directors for Air & Waste Management Association BC/YK Chapter and Pacific Northwest Section. Greg has over 22 years of experience helping clients manage their environmental liabilities related to contaminated sites. Greg has directed investigation and remediation projects with budgets ranging from thousands to more than ten million dollars, evaluated a variety of industries and operations including: sawmill and wood treating facilities, chemical plants, service stations, bulk fuel handling facilities, dry cleaners, paint manufacturers, coal and metals mines, highways maintenance facilities, unexploded ordnance sites, airport facilities, and rail yards. Greg has extensive experience navigating the BC CSR for both private and public sector clients and has received over 40+ MoE Instruments in the past 5 years (Approvals, Determinations or Certificates of Compliance). Greg also spent 10 years working in the USA on USEPA Superfund and National Priority List sites.

Kinji Bourchier, Partner, Lawson Lundell LLP, Vancouver, BC. Kinji’s primary practice areas include complex commercial and civil litigation with a focus on contractual disputes, environmental remediation claims, product liability claims, shareholder and transactional disputes, and business torts. Kinji has a focused practice in the field of environmental remediation cost-recovery claims and contaminated-site litigation. He regularly appears as lead counsel in the British Columbia Supreme Court, has appeared as lead counsel in the British Columbia Court of Appeal, and has appeared before several administrative tribunals. Eva Gerencher, Principal Scientist, SLR Consulting (Canada) Ltd, Victoria, BC. Eva Gerencher has over 29 years of experience providing consulting services in the areas of contaminated site investigation and remediation, environmental impact and compliance assessments, waste management, permitting and regulatory affairs in British Columbia, Alberta, and Yukon. Eva has significant expertise in the development and implementation of site closure strategies to address liability and compliance issues at commercial and industrial properties and has provided technical support for environmental litigation matters for both insurers and private companies. She provides senior-level technical support and regulatory guidance for SLR’s BC and Yukon project teams working with diverse client groups including oil and gas companies, governmental organizations, property developers, and industrial process clients. Ms. Gerencher is a CSAP Approved Professional (AP) for Standards Assessment. As an AP Eva has obtained numerous legal instruments issued including Determinations, Approvals in Principle and Certificates of Compliance. Eva is a member of the Board of Directors and Experience Review Panel and is the Chair of the Performance Assessment Committee for the Contaminated Sites Approved Professional Society.

   

Owen James, Partner, McEwan Partners, Vancouver, BC. Owen James practises commercial litigation, with a particular focus on complex corporate-commercial litigation, environmental litigation, real estate litigation and insolvency litigation. He has appeared as counsel at the trial and appellate levels, including at the Supreme Court of Canada, and has also acted for clients in arbitration and before a variety of administrative tribunals. Prior to practice, Owen served as a judicial law clerk to several justices of the British Columbia Supreme Court. Owen regularly contributes to the Continuing Legal Education Society and has written for the Annual Review of Law and Practice and Provincial Court Small Claims Handbook, of which he serves on the Editorial Board. He has written on a range of topics for The International Who’s Who of Insolvency & Restructuring Lawyers, CCH Tax Topics, Canadian Property Management and Annual Review of Insolvency Law, and has also presented on topics relating to his practice. He was recognized as a Future Litigation Star by Benchmark in 2018.

   
 

Angela Juba, Counsel, McCarthy Tétrault LLP, Vancouver, BC. Angela is counsel in McCarthy’s Vancouver Litigation Group, where she maintains a general litigation practice focussed on complex commercial litigation, and in particular matters of product liability, public law and privacy. She has appeared as counsel at the Supreme Court of Canada, at all levels of court in British Columbia, and before a provincial commission of inquiry. Prior to joining the firm, she served as a Law Clerk to the Honourable Mr. Justice Ian Binnie of the Supreme Court of Canada.

   

Duncan Macdonald, P.Eng., CSAP, Vice President Operations, PGL Environmental Consultants, Vancouver, BC. Duncan is a very accomplished environmental engineer, and with a career focused on sites assessment and remediation, he skillfully helps acquire regulatory approvals for contaminated sites. He is one of the most active Approved Professionals with BC’s Contaminated Sites Approved Professionals (CSAP) Society with respect to making regulatory submissions and is even considered a great resource by CSAP and Ministry of Environment staff, having made several successful ‘firsts’ in the realm of regulatory approvals. Duncan is part of the Performance Assessment Committee at CSAP (the ‘audit’ committee), where professional judgement is always a hot topic.

   
 

Alan McCammon, MSc PGeo, Manager, Remediation Assurance & Brownfields, Land Remediation, Ministry of Environment and Climate Change Strategy, Surrey, BC. Alan McCammon is a member of the management team for the Land Remediation Section of British Columbia's Ministry of Environment and Climate Change Strategy. His primary responsibilities focus on the areas of high-risk contaminated site management, compliance/enforcement, brownfield remediation and redevelopment, and information management.  Alan is an experienced statutory decision maker under the Environmental Management Act involving investigation and remediation orders, independent remediation, and a wide range of other legal instruments.  He regularly collaborates with colleagues in the ministry’s Environmental Emergencies Program and Regional Operations Branch to ensure consistent delivery of the statute and regulations.  Alan is a registered professional geoscientist specializing in contaminant hydrogeology.

   

Jana McLean, Associate Counsel, BR Law, Vancouver, BC. Jana practises in the areas of environmental, natural resources and Indigenous law. Jana has advised on all areas of environmental law, with extensive experience in the areas of contaminated sites, water and fisheries law, environmental assessments, environmental compliance, and environmental prosecutions. She is also experienced in advising on all stages of resource development, including legal challenges to resource development decisions and project compliance. Jana is on the executive of the Environmental Law Sub-section of the CBA(BC). She was described as a “rising star” in environmental law in the 2016 edition of The Legal 500 Canada, and recognized in the 2016-2018 editions of The Best Lawyers in Canada in the area of environmental law.

   

Cindy Ott, M.Sc., P.Ag., GeoL., P.Chem., Principal Scientist, SLR Consulting (Canada) Ltd., Vancouver, BC. Cindy Ott has over 28 years of experience in providing consultation in the areas of human health and ecological risk assessments, contaminated site investigation and management, environmental chemistry, environmental impact assessment, hydrogeology and environmental analytical chemistry. An experienced scientist and project manager, Ms. Ott possesses a unique combination of direct experience in ecological and human health risk assessment, and direct experience in contaminated sites investigation and monitoring. She is a CSAP Approved Professional for both Standards and Risk Assessment, and has three professional designations. She is also a Qualified Person for site investigation, remediation and risk assessment for Saskatchewan. She is an active member of CSAP including past participation in Performance Assessment Committee, Exam Development, Applicant Reviews, and Executive. She was a Board Member from 2008 to 2014 and President from 2012 to 2014 and is currently a member of the Governance Committee. She has provided litigation support including preparation of an expert report respecting technical and regulatory issues, preparation for trial, expert testimony and cross examination at trial. Cindy was accepted by the BC Supreme Court as an expert in contaminated sites.

   

Peter Reid, Vice President, Quality and Client Services, Hemmera Envirochem Inc., Vancouver, BC. Peter Reid, M.Eng., P.Eng., CSAP, MBA is the Vice President of Quality and Client Services at Hemmera and an active CSAP member. Peter has completed over 1400 environmental projects, including some of the largest in Western Canada. He has developed an excellent working relationship with the MOE and has completed CSAP reviews on a variety of sites. Peter is the President of CSAP and has made many contributions to MOE policy. He has also completed 30 expert witness reports for legal proceedings in a variety of claims within five Canadian Provinces.

   

Tara Siemens Kennedy, M.E.T, PChem., CSAP, Senior Project Specialist, Environmental Toxicologist, SNC-Lavalin, Environment Division, Burnaby, BC. Tara is a Senior Risk Assessment Specialist/Toxicologist with SNC-Lavalin. She has more than 20 years experience in contaminated sites investigation and remediation, with more than 18 years experience conducting human health and ecological risk assessments. She sits on the Board of Directors of the Society of Contaminated Sites Approved Professionals of BC, is chair of its Discipline Committee and a member of the Performance Assessment Committee.

   

Janice Walton, Counsel, Blake, Cassels & Graydon LLP, Vancouver, BC. Janice has extensive experience in both the litigation and corporate/commercial aspects of environmental law, including environmental assessment, environmental permitting, remediation of contaminated sites, dangerous goods and hazardous waste management due diligence strategies, federal and provincial regulatory prosecutions, administrative review of regulatory decisions, and endangered species. She works with a wide range of industries, including the energy, mining, transportation, manufacturing and forestry sectors. Janice has taught environmental law in the environmental studies program at Langara College, and has served on the City of Port Moody’s Environmental Protection Committee.
