Carmen S. Thériault, Q.C., Partner, Norton Rose Fulbright Canada LLP, Vancouver, BC. Carmen is a senior partner of Norton Rose Fulbright Canada LLP, a member of its Partnership Committee, and the leader of its Wealth Management Group. She has extensive experience advising individuals, financial institutions, and government in relation to trust and estate planning related matters, with a particular emphasis on advising families with multi-generation business interests on governance and succession. She is a member of the Canadian Bar Association and the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel, a fellow of the International Academy of Estate and Trust Law, and the past President of the Estate Planning Council of Vancouver. Carmen is also the past Chair of Lions Gate Hospital Foundation, a member of the Honorary Board of Big Sisters of BC Lower Mainland, and a member of the Women’s International Forum based in Washington D.C.

Riley Burr, Partner, Norton Rose Fulbright Canada LLP, Vancouver, BC. Riley is a tax lawyer who advises high net worth individuals with significant private company interests and owner-managers in a wide variety of industries with regard to structuring their affairs in tax-efficient ways to meet their business or estate planning goals. He works closely with trust and commercial lawyers to advise on tax issues involved in family business succession planning, corporate re-organizations, private company shareholder agreements, charitable giving, and charity and not-for-profit organization regulation.

   

Sally Dennis, Partner, Farris, Vaughan, Wills & Murphy LLP, Vancouver, BC. As head of Farris’ private wealth group, Ms. Dennis provides advice on all aspects of inter-generational wealth transfer and estate and business succession planning. She also provides trustee advisory and estate administration services. She has law degrees from Oxford, UBC, and UVic, and has practised in Vancouver since the mid-80s, initially as a business/securities/M & A lawyer at a major national firm, but as a trusts and estate planning lawyer for the last decade. Ms. Dennis is a member of the Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners, the Family Firm Institute, and the Estate Planning Council (Vancouver), and holds a certificate in family enterprise advising from the UBC Sauder School of Business.

   

Fiona Hunter, Partner, Horne Coupar, Victoria, BC. Fiona Hunter is a partner at Horne Coupar, named one of Canada’s Top 5 Trusts & Estates Law Boutiques by Canadian Lawyer. Fiona practises exclusively in estate planning with an emphasis on trusts, and acts as a mediator in estate litigation. Fiona authors the Canadian edition of Drafting Trusts and Will Trusts in Canada (LexisNexis Canada 2016, 4th ed), and is a co-editor of and contributor to two publications: Financial and Estate Planning for the Mature Client in BC (LexisNexis Butterworths) and British Columbia Estate Planning and Wealth Preservation (BCCLE). She also authors an online wills practice resource for LexisNexis and has been qualified as an expert in the area of trust law by the Supreme Court of British Columbia. Fiona has been an Assistant Adjunct Professor at the University of Victoria, teaching the Succession course at the Law School. Fiona has served as past chair of both the Wills and Trusts Section (Victoria) and the Elder Law Section (BC) of the Canadian Bar Association. Fiona has been recognized by her peers for inclusion in the Best Lawyers in Canada since 2008, and as the “Lawyer of the Year” in 2013, 2015, and 2016 on Vancouver Island.

   

Roger Lee, Partner, DLA Piper (Canada) LLP, Vancouver, BC. Since his call to the bar, Roger has developed an extensive practice in trust and estate litigation. He assists individuals with respect to their rights under the governing legislation, as well as issues relating to the validity of wills. He also advises corporate and individual trustees, as well as personal representatives, of their legal obligations and duties on a regular basis, and also acts for beneficiaries who question the actions of the trustees of their particular trusts. Roger has appeared as counsel before all levels of provincial courts, including the provincial family, small claims, and criminal courts, the British Columbia Supreme Court, the British Columbia Court of Appeal, and the Queen’s Bench of Saskatchewan. Roger is a frequent speaker on topics associated with estate litigation. He has been listed in the The Best Lawyers in Canada directory under Trusts and Estates (Litigation) since 2006, and is recognized by Lexpert and Benchmark Canada as a leading practitioner in the field of estate and trust litigation.

   

Pam Prior, CPA, CA, TEP, Partner, Tax, KPMG LLP, Burnaby, BC. Pam has been with KPMG for over 25 years and has been practising tax since 1990. In her practice, Pam acts as a trusted business advisor to private owner managed businesses, focusing on addressing tax compliance and tax planning issues at both a corporate and personal level. She specializes in the areas of estate planning, trusts and charitable giving and has received a Trust and Estate Practitioner (TEP) designation from the Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners. She also advises charities and non-for-profit organizations on their tax compliance and tax planning issues.

   

Catharine Turner, Senior Trust Advisor, RBC Wealth Management, Estate & Trust Services, Vancouver, BC. With more than 25 years of industry experience, Catharine heads up a team that looks after the administration of Estates, Trusts, and Powers of Attorney. She also works with individuals, families, and businesses providing customized estate, trust, and incapacity solutions. A graduate of the University of British Columbia, Catharine has continued to deepen her knowledge and expertise with key industry designations, such as the Chartered Financial Planner (CFP), Financial Management Advisor (FMA), and Trust and Estate Practitioner (TEP) designations.

   

Laura West, Partner, Norton Rose Fulbright Canada LLP, Vancouver, BC. Laura is a partner of Norton Rose Fulbright Canada LLP (Vancouver) and a member of the Private Client Legal Team of the Year (midsize firm category) awarded at the 2016/2017 international STEP Private Client Awards. She is called to the bars of British Columbia and Ontario, and is engaged in a general practice in the areas of wealth management, estates, trusts, charity, and not-for-profit law. She has been recognized by Best Lawyers in Canada and has been rated Repeatedly Recommended in the areas of Estate & Personal Tax Planning and Charities / Not-for-Profit Law in the Canadian Legal Lexpert Directory. She was also the co-recipient of a Lexpert Gold Zenith award recognizing pro bono work in the legal profession. Laura has taught Wills and Estate Planning at the University of Toronto Faculty of Law as an adjunct professor.
