Sarah Batut, Partner, Fasken Martineau DuMoulin LLP, Vancouver, BC. Sarah has comprehensive experience in real estate transactions including acquisitions and sales, subdivisions (including airspace subdivisions), development of mixed-use, commercial and residential projects and commercial leasing. Sarah also has experience in various corporate and commercial practices. She is on the Executive Board of the Vancouver Bar Association, and is a member of the CBA’s Real Property Section, the International Council of Shopping Centers and the Commercial Real Estate Women’s Network. Sarah is a regular presenter for PBLI.

   

Barbara Vanderburgh, Partner, Fasken Martineau DuMoulin LLP, Vancouver, BC. Barbara practises business law with a focus on the real estate industry. Her practice includes real estate development and acquisitions, corporate acquisitions and reorganizations and asset-based commercial transactions. Barbara’s work includes land acquisition and subdivision, development of mixed-use projects, air space subdivision, condominium development and leasing and property management. She represents real estate developers involved in industrial, commercial and residential developments and acts for commercial vendors and purchasers. Barbara is a member of the Commercial Real Estate Women’s Network, the Urban Development Institute and International Council of Shopping Centers; and is a former adjunct professor teaching Real Estate Development at the UBC Faculty of Law. She has been listed in The Best Lawyers in Canada for Real Estate Law every year since 2010.

   

Faculty

Allyson Baker, Partner, Clark Wilson LLP, Vancouver, BC. Allyson’s practice focuses primarily on the areas of infrastructure and strata property. When working through these issues, Allyson tries to convert complex concepts into simplified terms, which allows her clients to make informed decisions that bring success. Her goal is to draft her clients’ documents in a way that minimizes potential problems during the implementation of her clients’ endeavours. Allyson also has 14 years of experience as a litigator, and knows what is involved and what is at stake in going to trial. With the amendments to the Strata Property Act allowing for winding up with a reduced owner approval threshold, Allyson and Clark Wilson LLP have been working with a number of strata corporations as they work their way through the winding up process. Allyson is a member of the Canadian Bar Association and the Canadian Council for Public Private Partnerships, and a board member for the Condominium Homeowners Association and the Developmental Disabilities Association of Vancouver-Richmond. She is also a co-editor of the CLE Strata Property Act Practice Manual and author or co-author of the chapters regarding rentals, insurance, employment and duty to repair.

   

Ashley Willard Bauman, Senior Project Director, Rennie Marketing Systems, Rennie Group, Vancouver, BC. With a real estate career spanning 17 years, 14 countries including China, Australia, United States, and France and over $2 billion in revenue, Ashley has proven herself to be an expert in planning and marketing world-class neighbourhoods, resorts, purpose-built rental buildings, and commercial developments. At Rennie, she applies her leadership experience to purpose-built rental projects and to the growth of markets outside the Lower Mainland. Ashley has played a leadership role in the successful marketing and pre-leasing of over 750 new rental units, and has played leadership roles in many master planned communities including Wesbrook Village UBC, Tsawwassen Springs, the University District Calgary, as well as more than 12 resort communities.

   

Daniel Bennett, Q.C., Partner, Norton Rose Fulbright Canada LLP, Vancouver, BC. Dan Bennett is the National Chair of the firm’s Litigation Department. His practice is focused in the areas of trial, arbitration, hearing and appeal work in commercial and administrative litigation. Dan has conducted cases in commercial, real estate, and natural resource matters in BC, Yukon and Alberta Superior Courts and Courts of Appeal, and the Federal Courts, including the Supreme Court of Canada. Dan also regularly conducts arbitrations and appears before a number of real estate and forestry administrative boards.

   

John Conicella, Chief Operating Officer, Serracan Properties Ltd., Vancouver, BC. As COO, John is responsible for leading the operations of Serracan with a special focus on the continued growth of its development operations. John has 25 years experience in real estate development, design and construction. During this time he has led and managed several major re-zonings and developments in over 20 municipalities. His experience includes residential, retail, office, health services and industrial sectors with a specialized expertise in urban, mixed-use developments. Prior to his role at Serracan, John was President of British Pacific Properties and also Vice President, Development Strategy and Business Development for Wesgroup Properties. He is a former President of NAIOP Vancouver and is a Facility Committee member for the new Polygon Gallery in North Vancouver.

   

Alexander Demner, Associate, Thorsteinssons LLP, Vancouver, BC. Alexander’s practice covers several areas of taxation, including owner-manager remuneration, estate planning, pre-sale and divestiture structuring, and taxpayer representation. Alexander has routinely advised on and implemented reorganizations for individuals, trusts, and private corporations in both the domestic and international context, and has overseen the successful resolution of several complex tax litigation matters. He obtained a B.A. (With Distinction) in International Relations and a second B.A. (With Distinction) in Political Science at the University of Calgary, before receiving his J.D. from Queen’s University. Alexander has spoken at numerous conferences, including the Canadian Tax Foundation’s 2016 Annual Tax Conference, and has written several papers and articles on a variety of tax-related matters. Alexander is currently the Chair of the Steering Committee of the Canadian Tax Foundation Young Practitioner’s Vancouver Chapter, has completed the CPA In-Depth Tax Course, and is a member of the Canadian Bar Association.

   

Heidi Granger, Assistant Director for Development and Real Estate, Law Department, City of Vancouver, Vancouver, BC. Heidi was called to the bar in 2004 and practised in the area of real estate, commercial and environmental law at Fasken Martineau before joining the City of Vancouver in 2008. Heidi has a varied practice at the City which includes advising on and preparing agreements for heritage projects, rezoning and development projects, land acquisitions and dispositions, policy work and affordable housing initiatives.

   

Olga Rivkin, Solicitor, Lidstone & Company, Vancouver, BC. Olga advises local governments and other public entities on a variety of topics, including land development, subdivision, real estate, highways, remediation, water, infrastructure and general day to day operations. Olga publishes and presents extensively on issues of importance to local governments.

   

Kaitlin Smiley, Associate, Norton Rose Fulbright Canada LLP, Vancouver, BC. Kaitlin Smiley is an associate in the firm’s Litigation Department.  Her commercial litigation practice includes disputes between property owners, matters involving services provided by real estate agents and issues under the Strata Property Act.  Kaitlin has appeared before the BC Supreme Court and Court of Appeal, as well as the Federal Court and Court of Appeal on complex interlocutory matters, trials and appeals.
