Chair

Deidre J. Herbert, Partner, McLellan Herbert, Vancouver BC. Ms. Herbert was an ad hoc Bencher for the Law Society of British Columbia (Unauthorized Practice) from 1992 until 1994 and is a former chair of the Canadian Bar Association Wills & Trusts (Vancouver) subsection. She is a contributing author to CLE’s Estate Planning and Wealth Preservation, CLE’s Annotated Estates Practice, and is a frequent lecturer for the Professional Legal Training Program and Continuing Legal Education. Ms. Herbert was also a member of the Intestate Succession, Wills Variation Act, and Family Relations Act Subcommittee as part of the Succession Law Reform Project.

   

Faculty

Barbara Buchanan, Q.C., BA, MA, LLB, Practice Advisor, Conduct & Ethics, The Law Society of British Columbia, Vancouver, BC. Barbara provides confidential practice and ethics advice to lawyers in a wide variety of practice situations through her role at the Law Society of BC.  She also prepares publications and resources on behalf of the Law Society. Before her current role, Barbara was in private legal practice, was an adjudicator for administrative tribunals, and was General Counsel of an international company.  She has also taught law courses in a variety of settings both local and abroad. Called to the BC bar in 1988, Barbara also has a master’s degree in special education and has a background as a consultant for people with disabilities and people working with them.  Barbara is a member of a variety of professional and community organizations.   

   

Andrea E. Frisby, T.E.P., Legacy Tax + Trust Lawyers, Vancouver, BC.  Andrea focuses her practice on assisting clients with estate and trust planning and administration, both simple and complex. She prepares wills, trust documents, powers of attorney and representation agreements for clients, and also provides legal advice on estate and trust administration. Andrea has authored numerous papers in the areas of wills, estate, trusts and capacity issues and is a frequent speaker on these topics.

   

Dr. Stefanie Green, SolaceBC, Victoria, BC. Dr. Stefanie Green spent 10 years in general practice and another 12 years working exclusively in maternity and newborn care. She changed her focus in 2016 and now spends the great majority of her clinical time working in assisted dying. Based in Victoria, BC, Dr. Green is the co-founder and current President of the Canadian Association of MAID Assessors and Providers (CAMAP). She is medical advisor to the BC Ministry of Health MAID oversight committee, moderator of CAMAP’s national online forum and has hosted 3 national conferences on the topic. Dr. Green enjoys speaking about MAID to the public, to health care communities and to a wide range of audiences locally, nationally and internationally. She is clinical faculty at University of British Columbia and the University of Victoria.

   

Leanne Lange, Clinical Specialist, Adult Abuse & Neglect, Fraser Health, Surrey, BC. Leanne has been Fraser Health’s Clinical Specialist, Adult Abuse & Neglect for the last seven years, leading Fraser Health’s response to adult abuse. She provides consultation and support to staff in hospitals, community programs, and residential care who respond to situations of abuse and neglect of vulnerable adults. She also develops resources and provides education to staff. Finally, she assists to solve system-level issues which affect vulnerable adults.

   

Joanne Taylor, Executive Director and Registrar, Nidus Personal Planning Resource Centre and Registry, Vancouver, BC. Joanne Taylor is Executive Director and Registrar of the Nidus Personal Planning Resource Centre and Registry, a non-profit, charitable organization. Joanne has helped thousands of people over some 20 years to learn about planning for incapacity, end-of-life, and other support needs. Nidus (a Latin term for nest) has a wealth of resource materials including videos and graphics on its website to help the public and professionals learn about concepts related to personal planning, health care consent, and adult guardianship. With the help of a Practice Advisory Group that includes legal experts, Nidus is able to provide accurate and up-to-date information and analysis about this evolving and dynamic field to assist the public as well as legal practitioners.

   

Sukhminder S. Virk, Lawyer, Lindsay Kenney LLP, Langley, BC. Sukhminder is an associate with a mixed solicitor’s practice including Corporate and Commercial Law, Wills and Estates, and Real Estate. He advises both for-profit and not-for-profit organizations regarding corporate and governance issues. He also has experience in a variety of corporate transactions, including complex corporate reorganizations. Sukhminder’s trust and estate practice focuses on working with clients and their families to address complex tax, estate, and family issues.
