Sarah Batut, Partner, Fasken Martineau DuMoulin LLP, Vancouver, BC. Sarah has comprehensive experience in real estate transactions including acquisitions and sales, subdivisions (including airspace subdivisions), development of mixed-use, commercial and residential projects and commercial leasing. Sarah also has experience in various corporate and commercial practices. She is a member of the CBA’s Real Property Section, the International Council of Shopping Centers and the Commercial Real Estate Women’s Network. Sarah is a regular presenter for PBLI.

   

Barbara Vanderburgh, Partner, Fasken Martineau DuMoulin LLP, Vancouver, BC. Barbara practises business law with a focus on the real estate industry. Her practice includes real estate development and acquisitions, corporate acquisitions and reorganizations and asset-based commercial transactions. Barbara’s work includes land acquisition and subdivision, development of mixed-use projects, air space subdivision, condominium development and leasing and property management. She represents real estate developers involved in industrial, commercial and residential developments and acts for commercial vendors and purchasers. Barbara is a former adjunct professor teaching Real Estate Development at the UBC Faculty of Law. She has been listed in The Best Lawyers in Canada for Real Estate Law every year since 2010.

Daniel Byma, Senior Associate, Fasken Martineau DuMoulin LLP, Vancouver, BC. Daniel is a litigation and dispute resolution lawyer with a broad commercial litigation practice. Daniel represents clients on a wide range of complex matters involving real estate, contracts, economic torts, breach of trust and fiduciary duties, companies and partnerships, and civil fraud. His real estate practice involves claims arising from failed purchase and sale transactions, leasing disputes, misrepresentations and fraud, easements, building schemes, and other encumbrances. Prior to joining Fasken, Daniel clerked at the Supreme Court of Canada for the Honorable Justice Wagner.

   

Aidan Cameron, Partner, McCarthy Tétrault LLP, Vancouver, BC. Aidan is a partner in McCarthy’s Litigation Group. Seasoned in construction, mining, real estate and insurance, she leverages her deep industry knowledge to swiftly resolve complex and contentious disputes. Aidan represents a wide variety of clients, including developers of residential and commercial properties, general contractors, and mining companies. Her experience includes resolving multi-party contract disputes, complex builders lien matters, delay claims and all manner of property related disputes, including those involving commercial leases, purchase agreements, collapsing deals and defective work product claims. Aidan has written extensively on the topic of real property, frequently delivering legal education presentations to clients and other law firms. She is a member of both the Canadian and American Bar Associations.

   

Damon Chisholm, Partner, McMillan LLP, Vancouver, BC. Damon is Co-Chair of his firm’s Commercial Real Estate Group and is a member of the Financial Services Group. His practice focuses on all aspects of commercial real estate including development, subdivisions, stratifications, acquisitions, dispositions, financing, and leasing of commercial properties. Damon’s experience includes acting for natural resource companies in complex project financing and acquisitions, purchasers and vendors of large commercial developments, including land acquisitions, hotels, apartment buildings and industrial and office complexes as well as successfully negotiating complex commercial and railway land leases for major landlords and for a variety of industrial tenants. Damon’s practice also includes commercial lending matters including secured, unsecured and project financing and he has acted for institutional and private lenders and borrowers.

   

Jordanna Cytrynbaum, Litigation Counsel, Whitelaw Twining Law Corporation, Vancouver, BC. Jordanna is an experienced litigator specializing in complex disputes. She regularly represents clients before all levels of court, administrative tribunals and in arbitration, both domestic and international. Her expertise includes representing and advising private sector clients such as developers, owners of land, shopping malls and strata corporations in development matters, contract disputes, leasing matters, property transfer tax disputes and municipal law issues. Jordanna is co-author of the Real Estate Chapter for Annual Review of Law and Practice and the Collapsing Deal chapter of the BC Real Estate Practice Manual. She regularly publishes and is a frequent presenter on a variety of commercial litigation and real estate topics for both legal and lay audiences. Jordanna was also recently appointed as an adjudicator for the BC Civil Resolution Tribunal.

   

Alexander Demner, Partner, Thorsteinssons LLP, Vancouver, B.C. Alexander’s practice covers several areas of taxation, including owner-manager remuneration, estate planning, pre-sale and divestiture structuring, and taxpayer representation (both at the administrative appeal stage and in front of the Tax Court of Canada and beyond). Alexander has routinely advised on and implemented reorganizations for individuals, trusts, and private corporations in both the domestic and international context, and has overseen the successful resolution of several complex tax litigation matters. Alexander regularly speaks and presents, including at the Canadian Tax Foundation’s 2016 Annual Tax Conference and 2014 British Columbia and Ontario Regional Tax Conferences, and has written several papers and articles on a variety of tax-related matters. He is a former Chair of the Steering Committee of the Canadian Tax Foundation Young Practitioner’s Vancouver Chapter, is a Director on the Canadian National Institute for the Blind (CNIB) BC & Yukon Division Board of Directors, has completed the CPA In-Depth Tax Course, and is a member of the Canadian Bar Association.

   

Jennifer Drury, Vice President and Branch Manager, Real Estate Lending, Canadian Western Bank, Vancouver, BC. Jennifer has over 25 years of experience in the banking sector. As Vice President and Branch Manager of the Vancouver Real Estate Lending Group for Canadian Western Bank, Jennifer and her team oversee some of the largest developers in Western Canada. Strong relationship building skills and a deep understanding of each client’s requirements allow Jennifer to play a key role in building CWB’s real estate portfolio. She was instrumental in growing the portfolio for the Bank from $400 million to $2 billion over 10 years. Utilizing a flexible, common sense approach, Jennifer is able to structure loans in a constantly growing and changing industry while managing the Bank’s risk appetite. Jennifer is an active coach and mentor, and holds a degree in Business Finance and Management from the University of Alberta.

Rhiannon Mabberley, Westbank Projects, Vancouver, BC. Rhiannon is a senior executive with Westbank Projects where she has been involved in some of the company’s most notable developments, including Woodward’s, TELUS garden and Oakridge. From sustainability initiatives to district energy systems to complex permitting and everything in between, Rhiannon’s experience speaks to the finer details of real estate development. Westbank Projects is one of Vancouver’s busiest development firms, with over $25B worth of projects either completed or under development. Notable recent projects include Vancouver House, 1550 Alberni and the 28 acres at Oakridge Mall. James Sutcliffe, Partner, McMillan LLP, Vancouver, BC.
