LOCAL GOVERNMENT: STRATEGIC SOLUTIONS AND BEST PRACTICES

In Canada, it is the federal level of government who has authority in many crucial sectors, including air and rail transportation; shipping and navigation; energy; telecommunications; and criminal regulation. In practice, however, local governments are directly affected by the day-to-day and long-term operations of these sectors within their boundaries. To complicate matters, local governments, including municipal, county and semi-regional councils, boards and agencies are not constitutionally recognized entities, but rather fall under the jurisdiction of the provinces and territories who are responsible for their creation.

This program brings together leading legal experts alongside local government officials and representatives to explore the role local governments play in these federally regulated sectors, and to offer viable solutions and best practices for advancing the interests of local governments.
