Meet the Chair

  • Partner, Thorsteinssons LLP, Vancouver, BC

    Ian’s practice focuses primarily on advising private Canadian corporations and their shareholders on income tax matters, including mergers and acquisitions, corporate reorganizations, succession planning, estate planning and tax planning with trusts. Additionally, Ian represents taxpayers in certain tax controversy matters, primarily at the audit and administrative appeals level. Ian is a former co-author of the taxation chapter of the CLE Annual Review of Law and Practice and has authored a number of papers on various income tax matters.

  • Principal, Legacy Tax + Trust Lawyers, Vancouver, BC

    Areet is a Principal with Legacy Tax + Trust Lawyers where she assists clients with personal and corporate tax matters including corporate reorganizations, estate freezes and restructuring for business succession purposes. Areet also provides clients with advice regarding tax-driven trust and estate planning matters including assistance setting up trusts (family trusts, alter ego and joint spousal trusts) and advising on trust transactions including restructuring and winding up. Areet also advises charities and non-profit organizations on registration, tax compliance and structuring matters.

    Areet received her Bachelor of Laws degree (with distinction) from the University of Alberta in 2010. She was called to the Bar in the Province of British Columbia in 2011. Prior to joining Legacy, Areet was a partner at a large regional law firm where she practiced for many years.

    Areet is recognized in the 2024 and 2025 edition of the Best Lawyers in Canada directory for her work in trusts and estates.

    Areet has completed the CPA Canada In Depth Tax Course, and was previously the chair of the Canadian Bar Association of British Columbia, Tax Subsection.

  • Partner, Singleton Urquhart Reynolds Vogel LLP, Vancouver, BC

    Parveen Karsan, TEP is a Partner, Chair of the Tax Practice Group, and Co-Chair of the Wills and Estates Practice Group at Singleton Urquhart Reynolds Vogel LLP. Parveen advises clients on personal and corporate taxation, estate planning, and trust-related matters. She also maintains a diverse business law practice.

    Parveen represents and assists clients with the resolution of tax disputes with the Canada Revenue Agency at the audit, appeal, and Tax Court levels.

    As part of her estate planning practice, Parveen provides tailored estate plans to ensure that her clients’ legacies are properly preserved. Parveen has facility with preparing simple to highly complex Wills, as well as Powers of Attorney, Representation Agreements, Alter Ego Trusts, Joint Spousal Trusts, and other estate-related documents.

    Parveen has been selected by her peers for inclusion in Best Lawyers in Canada in the fields of Tax Law and Trusts and Estates.

  • Principal, Crowe MacKay LLP, Vancouver, BC

    Devon works primarily with privately-held businesses in a variety of industries providing Canadian corporate tax planning services. He also provides cross-border and international tax advisory services for Canadian resident and non-resident entities. He has experience with Canadian corporate, estate, and personal tax matters, as well as various international tax treaties.

    Alexei maintains a broad tax practice with a view to achieving tax efficiency across his clients’ personal and business affairs. Alexei’s advisory work relates primary to succession / estate planning and reorganizations of closely-held corporations. Alexei also regularly advises on immigration / emigration tax planning, taxation of settlements, executive compensation and tax-exempt organizations.

    Alexei currently serves as the vice-president of the Canadian Tax Foundation’s Vancouver Young Practitioners Steering Committee and is an instructor and author for Chartered Professional Accountants (British Columbia) and the Continuing Legal Education Society of British Columbia (CLEBC). Alexei also serves as a director of the Pacific Symphonic Wind Ensemble, a registered charitable organization.

  • Principal, Polaris Tax Counsel, Vancouver, BC

    Max Reed is a Cross-Border Tax Lawyer and the founding partner of Polaris Tax Counsel. He solves tax problems that span both sides of the Canada-US border. Max is the co-author (with Dick Pound of Stikeman Elliot) of A Tax Guide for American Citizens in Canada, as well as over 20 technical and plain language articles on a wide range of cross-border tax topics. Max has developed a number of novel solutions to common cross-border tax problems.

The registration fee is $890.00 plus GST of $44.50 totalling $934.50 for webinar and in-person attendance. Registration fee covers your attendance at the program and electronic materials. In-person attendance includes a catered lunch and refreshments throughout the day.

Early Bird Discount:

Register by September 29, 2025 and receive a $100 discount on the registration fee ($790.00 plus GST). Discounts cannot be combined.

Group Discount:

Register four persons from the same organization at the same time and you are entitled to a complimentary fifth registration. Discounts cannot be combined.

Cancellations/Transfers:

Refunds will be given for cancellations (less a $60.00 administration fee) if notice is received in writing five full business days prior to the program (October 20, 2025). After that time we are unable to refund registration fees. Substitutions will be permitted. We reserve the right to cancel, change or revise the date, faculty, content, availability of webinar or venue and transfer in-person registration to webinar registration for this event.
